We all know that smoothies can be great for you and a wonderful way of getting good quantities of quality nutrition into you quickly. Not only that, they are fun to make. But there more to them than maybe you thought…
We tend to hear more and more these days about inflammation and – as a result – the benefits of anything that deliver anti-inflammatory properties. And what do you know – smoothies are no different!
Inflammation is a natural body response caused bv white blood cells going into action to protect us from various forms of infection such as those caused by virus and bacteria. However it can also occur for misdirected reasons and this can take the form of arthritis for example which can be hugely debilitating.
Other conditions that are inflammation based include: osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, low back pain, neck pain. All of these conditions have the capacity to stop you in your tracks. Symptoms are usually, redness, swelling and pain to touch, joint stiffness, joint pain, loss of function.
Inflammation can also be associated with more illness based feelings, particularly flu-like: fatigue, fever, chills, stiffness, loss of appetite, general stiffness and bodily discomfort.
And it is not only about the joints and muscles. Inflammation can impact seriously on internal organs too. This includes the: heart, kidneys and the tubes that transfer air to the lungs. Pretty serious areas!
So it is very evident that inflammation can play havoc throughout the body and is always something that needs addressing when it arises. However the best way to do this is often a point of debate but I’d always say the steroid approach should be avoided when possible.
And with that in mind I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to the smoothie response to inflammation!
What do you need to prepare this ‘anti-inflammatory potion’?
Turmeric – Its bioactive compounds have numerous medicinal properties, Curcumin is its primary active ingredient and this is a known strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant.
Ginger – Full of Gingerol which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant.
omega 3 – It is believed that 80% of people lack omega 3 in their diet. Amongst its many benefits, it is know to reduce the production of some substances associated with inflammation.
These three key components alone make this a powerhouse smoothie, but when combined with all the other ingredients, also packed full of benefits, this truly makes for a high-powered smoothie of supercharged nutrients, antioxidants and a balance of macronutrients your body will absolutely thank you for!
So lets get down to it what do you need?
How to make the ultimate anti inflammatory diet smoothie!
Handful of kale
¼ cup goji berries
1-inch fresh turmeric (or 1 tsp. powdered organic turmeric)
1-cup green tea (brewed and left to cool or add ice cubes to cool for blending)
1 tbsp. Omega-3, 6, 9 oil
1 tsp. spirulina
– Place all ingredients in a blender and blitz until smooth. Add some water if the smoothie is too thick to get your desired consistency.
And now all that remains is to drink this, enjoy it and know you are doing great things for your body!
