The most common way that people become un-healthy is due to their diets and lifestyle choices. Living off processed foods and beverages not only make us gain weight, but they also contain a lot of nasty toxins that get stored in our bodies and lead to unwanted health issues.
The best way to avoid this is to have a clean, whole food approach to our diets.
It is never too late to change your diet and lifestyle habits, but you must consider the damage you have done to your body over the years with eating and drinking processed foods and beverages.
The best way to clean up the internal mess you have created is by cleansing the body of unwanted toxins. There are many diets and cleanses out there and it may be hard to decide which one is best for you.
I am not here to provide those answers, but I am sharing with you some information about a growing popular cleanse known as the Cayenne Pepper Diet.
What is the Cayenne Pepper Diet?
The Cayenne Pepper Diet (also know as the Master Cleanse, Lemonade Diet, Master Cleanser, Maple Syrup Diet, Lemon Diet, and the Beyoncé Diet) was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941 and later reintroduced by Peter Glickman in his 2004 book “The Master Cleanse, Loose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier”.
It has since gained popularity due to celebrities like Robin Quivers, co-host of the Howard Stern Show, and Beyoncé Knowles endorsing this diet as a weight loss tool, although it was originally intended as a cleanse or detox.
The cleanse is a minimum of 10 days consisting of drinking only organic grade B maple syrup, freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, and cayenne pepper that is added to purified, distilled, or spring (NOT fluoridated) water, 6 times a day.
There is to be no foods or liquids consumed, other than instructed, while on this cleanse.
The recipe is simple; 2 tbsp of lemon or lime juice (roughly the juice of a half a lemon/lime), 2 tbsp of pure maple syrup or honey, 1/10 tsp of cayenne pepper, and 8-oz of water mixed.
How does it Work?
The idea behind this cleanse is to flush toxins (poisons) out of the body, otherwise known as detoxification.
Detoxification is important as the foods we eat and our environments in which we live introduce a lot of toxins to our bodies and can lead to cancers, illnesses, fatigue and other ailments.
Lemons are high in vitamin C, which keeps our immune systems strong and neutralizes the free radicals in our bodies, contain pectin fiber (beneficial to colon health), acts as a blood purifier, aids in digestion and encourages the production of bile, strengthens the liver and aids in the production of digestive juices, which all aid in the detoxification process.
Cayenne pepper is a powerful compound used by many societies over history including the Americas and China.
Cayenne pepper helps stimulate circulation, increase the pulse of our lymphatic and digestive rhythms, neutralizes acidity, causes us to sweat (another important process of detoxification) and by heating the body, the natural process of detoxification is amplified.
Cayenne pepper is also anti-fungal, anti-allergen, is a well-known digestive aid that increases the flow of enzyme production and gastric juices, and stimulates intestinal peristaltic motion. This all helps the body to metabolize, assimilate and eliminate toxins.
Maple syrup contains polyphenols, which are plant-based compounds that work as antioxidants that neutralize free radicals in the body.
Honey contains phytonutrients that have antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral properties that may help boost your immune system and digestive system, aiding in the detoxification process.
Most people think detoxing is a one step process, “I have toxins and after I cleanse, I wont”, but it’s really a two-step process. The toxins are first mobilized from where they are stored in our bodies, which is usually the fat cells, then flushed out of via our digestive systems.
Once mobilized, feelings of fatigue, irritability, aches or mental fogginess may be experienced.
This is due to the toxins being released from the cells into our blood stream to pass through our liver and then eliminated via our urine or stools. The faster the elimination process happens, the less this unpleasant experience lasts.
It is recommended that two other additions be taken into consideration as phase two of the Cayenne Pepper Diet.
One is a cup of herbal laxative tea that is to be consumed each evening along with a salt-water flush to be consumed each morning. The salt-water flush is a quart of water with 2 tbsp of sea salt. A second cup of herbal laxative tea can substitute the salt-water flush, if desired.
These additions aid in washing away the toxins further and help cleanse the entire digestive track of the toxins released so they are not reintroduced into the body.
Many beneficial gut bacteria may be eliminated with this cleanse and it is important to return to a fresh, organic, whole-foods diet with some added probiotics to regenerate healthy beneficial gut bacteria.
This will ensure your digestion and immune system will be strong and keep you healthy and happy after the cleanse.
Other Variations of the Cayenne Pepper Diet
The original Cayenne Pepper Diet has seen great results for more than half a century, when used properly. There are several people altering this diet with adding in shakes, protein powders and cayenne pepper capsules, which contains gelatin, but this ruins the true intensions of the Cayenne Pepper Diet.
The idea behind the Cayenne Pepper Diet is to give the digestive system a break for at least 10 days and eliminate toxins to its fullest potential. It is to be considered as a “reset button”, but adding in other liquids, foods and capsules just reduces the effect of the cleanse and its effectiveness.
More about the Cayenne Pepper Diet
Fasting is no new concept to the human race and has been performed for thousands of years to rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit.
This cleanse is not only good for your body, but it is also a good time to detox your mind from any stress you have in your life as well as the media out there. This cleanse may help re-connect you emotionally and spiritually.
Burroughs came up with this diet as a detoxification program to rid the toxins from the body. He believed this helps remove the cravings usually associated with drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and sugary junk foods.
No solid foods are to be consumed during this cleanse, as stated above, because it will interfere with the detoxification process.
It is also not uncommon for people to continue longer than 10 days, if healthy and strong, with the Cayenne Pepper Diet. A good indicator of when you should stop the cleanse is when your tongue appears clear and pink in the morning rather than having that fuzzy coating commonly seen.
It is also very important that you are healthy and strong, or consult with your physician, before participating in this cleanse as well as using the highest-quality ingredients to ensure the best results for this cleanse.
