The categories we use to describe what we eat have become so diluted that saying you eat ‘paleo’ means different things to different people.
We all should choose to eat based on our bodies, our needs and our goals. Unfortunately many people follow the trends instead of what’s best for them.
A change in diet isn’t a one-size-fits-all dress you can put on
What you put in your mouth should be dictated by your individual needs according to body, lifestyle, hormones, DNA, and goals.
My boyfriend has not been diagnosed with Celiac’s, which is an intolerance to gluten, but when he removed gluten food and drink from his diet, he felt more energized, a decrease in mood swings and a overall sense of heightened well being.
I am currently on a ketogenic, mostly gluten-free diet because of Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which is caused by or causes insulin resistance and an unbalanced hormone profile.
As a woman, this can be detrimental to reproduction and can have serious long-term health consequences if left untreated.
Different people, different goals
Both my boyfriend and I are active, vibrant and healthy. We have different needs because we have different goals but we easily eat meals together.
Our foundation is in vegetables and protein. He simply eats more carbohydrates and I eat more fat. Simple.
Food should be simple
As humans, we naturally have foods that energize us or do the opposite and make us feel rubbish.
It’s our job to fill our refrigerators, pantries and plates with those foods that make us feel great, even if it means going ‘gluten-free’ or on a ketogenic diet.
Don’t be afraid to experiment!
What’s the worst that can happen? You learn how to feel amazing??
1. No matter what you eat, how much you eat matters. Calories-in are going to affect if you lose or gain weight.
2. Start tracking your food intake with a phone/website app. This makes it super easy to see your calories and macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fat).
3. See your doctor, a medical professional you trust, or a functional medicine doctor (a more holistically focused doctor) to talk about a blood panel (see directly what’s going on in your insides) and lifestyle to create a food guide and supplementation list that fits exactly what you need.
4. Stop eating so many carbohydrates. They make you fat. They make you sick. They make you lethargic.According to your needs and goals, you might need some, but the average diet is made up of 50% (or more!) of carbohydrates and we wonder why we’re diseased, tired and reproductively challenged!
If you’d like to try a change in diet, start out simple
Many professionals first recommend cutting out coffee, alcohol, dairy and soy for four weeks. After that, introduce each, one at a time to see how it affects you. If you drink coffee for the first time in a month and you feel like you want to take a nap, probably shouldn’t start consuming it again or use it sparingly.
Same thing for the other three.
If anything causes you to bloat, throw up, feel tired or irritable, consider these signs that your body doesn’t enjoy digesting them. Once you find what your body likes and doesn’t like, you can start shaping your diet based on those findings and your goals.
The ketogenic diet
For me, a ketogenic diet was the only option to holistically (without drugs) help my body reverse insulin resistance and balance my hormones. I love it!
It definitely took getting use to, that’s why I track my food, but now I thoroughly enjoy eating tons of whole food fats with vegetables and protein.

Most people have no clue how to eat better and Google will only get you so far. Your individual needs trump anything you can find online.
