Quick and tasty clean eating snacks
“Clean eating” or “eating clean” has become the buzzword of the dieting and nutrition community. In a world of growing concern regarding toxic foods and health issues it is no wonder clean eating is the topic being discussed. Have you ever wondered what it truly means?
Many experts may define clean eating in slightly different ways but they tend to agree that clean eating simply means eating fresh whole foods as close to their natural state as possible.
It is eating food without chemicals, preservatives, additives, refined, and processed ingredients. It is staying clear of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and animals treated with antibiotics and hormones. It is choosing organic when possible and choosing foods that promote sustainability. The ingredients become the guiding point when determining what foods to choose and which to avoid. Those following this way of eating often ask: Are these ingredients recognizable? Are they real?
Is Clean Eating the End of Chronic Dieting?
This way of eating is a lifestyle, and yes it is the hope of all chronic dieters. It is a sustainable lifestyle, which is the answer to the agony of dieting everywhere; since diets usually come and go with little success. It teaches a person to connect with his or her body, health, and environment in a whole new way. It ends the idea that food is only about calories, or fat grams, or carbs! Or whatever else those crazy diets try to sell to us.
Food is nourishment and impacts both our health and environment every single day. Clean eating promotes a healthy balance between the two.
5 Tasty Clean Eating Snacks
Try these easy snacks anytime. They are easy to make and can be taken with you anywhere. Try them for lunches, picnics, road trips, or for a snack while watching your favorite movie. Most importantly they are clean whole foods that have not been contaminated with chemicals and unnecessary ingredients. These snacks are also balanced in that they have at least two of the three macronutrients in each.
Guacamole and Vegetables– Avocados are very nutrient-dense, and we dietitians just love them. For this simple guacamole use 2 avocados, 2 TBSP minced red onions, 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice, 2 TBSP finely chopped cilantro, sea salt and black pepper. Cut the avocados in half, remove the seed, and scoop out the flesh of the avocados into a bowl. With a fork, roughly mash the avocado and mix with the other ingredients. Enjoy with any vegetables you prefer.
Homemade Trail Mix- Making your own trail mix is so easy and allows you to use whatever ingredients you prefer. Mix nuts, dried fruits, and even dark chocolate if you enjoy the sweet and salty flavor combination.
Cheese and Fruit- Choose your favorite kind of cheese and pair with any fruit you enjoy. My personal favorite is a raw, organic goat cheese paired with an organic black plum! For the sake of clean eating choose organic cheese varieties to avoid the harmful hormones and antibiotics.
Green Salad with Homemade Dressing- No need to complicate things. A simple green salad (topped with whatever you wish) and drizzled with a homemade dressing is a great clean snack! For an easy homemade dressing try 1/2- cup extra virgin olive oil, 1/4- cup apple cider vinegar, 1 clove smashed garlic, pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Throw in some herbs and there you go!
Green Smoothie- I’m a huge fan of green smoothies because you can blend fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and even a good quality protein powder to your hearts content for a clean snack (maybe even a meal somedays). My favorite green smoothie is simply: a handful of spinach and kale, a banana, 1/4 cup of pineapple, avocado, and ice cubes. Throw in some stevia if you want added sweetness.
