Even as a registered dietitian, I too, can become confused over all the diet plans out there.  But fear not, because there may just be one such diet plan on the bookshelves that offers a lifestyle plan as opposed to just a diet plan.  Celebrities like Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Megan Fox, Eva Mendes and even Katie Perry are all big fans of it.  This diet is the 5 Factor Diet Plan, created by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.

The 5 Factor Diet Plan revolves around the number 5, so your meals would include:


  1. Protein
  2. Complex carbs
  3. Fiber
  4. Healthy fats
  5. Fluids

One other great aspect too, is that the meal plans revolve around 5 ingredients and that makes food shopping and meal prep a cinch!

With this plan, you are also allowed a cheat day.  In another article here, I had stated I was not one who encourages a whole day of cheating, but Pasternak argues it is a good way to keep you focused on most days of the week.  In the end, this is a situation to be determined by you and the fitness and nutrition professional you are working with.

As far as an exercise plan to go along with this diet, you are advised to keep in sync with the number five again – no equipment required.


  1. Cardio warm up for 5 minutes
  2. Upper body moves for 5 minutes
  3. Lower body moves for 5 minutes
  4. Core work for 5 minutes
  5. Fat burning cardio for 5 minutes

So why is Eva Mendes is such a fan of the 5 Factor Diet? As a busy actress, it fits well with her schedule and she has actually been following it for over three years, now.  This really goes to show that it can be a lifestyle change as opposed to one of those of yo-yo diets for which you end up gaining back all the weight once “off” the diet.

What may this vegetarians day of food look like?

Breakfast: fruit salad, yogurt, sunflower seeds

Lunch: brown rice sushi

Dinner: large salad with feta and beets

Another great secret of hers, is that she is just plain real.  She admits to life’s food indulgences and will enjoy a roll while dining out.
