The 5 Unbelievable Benefits of Goji Berry
We hear a lot about superfoods these days and today I want to share with you my absolute favourite – the Goji Berry!
The benefits of goji berries have been known and used in Asian and Tibetan medicine for thousands of years and they are still used to increase longevity and maintain general physical health. The goji berry is one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world and that means you are getting the most nutrients for the least amount of calories. Mother Nature is really looking after us with this humble little berry.
Here are some of the amazing benefits of the goji berry.
Nutrient dense power punch
Goji berries are a great source of protein for vegetarians and they contain 15x more iron that spinach. They are high in vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, and E all of these are vital for our bodies to maintain a healthy immune system. They also contain 500 x more vitamin C than oranges! Vitamin C helps protect your body from infections and colds but it also helps our body’s ability to heal itself.
Rich in antioxidants
Goji berries are full of antioxidants that help support and strengthen your immunity. Our bodies use antioxidants to help prevent or slow down the damage that can be caused by free radicals. Free radicals are produced during the metabolic process. Sometimes they are produced to help our immune system and sometimes environmental factors play a part.
Our bodies were designed to handle free radicals but if our system has no antioxidants available major health problems can occur like heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration just to name a few. The older we get the more damage is caused by free radicals, that is why eating foods high in antioxidants is so important.
Goji berries also have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial benefits too.
The physical benefits of Goji Berries
Goji berries can help with the pain associated with menstrual cramps and they may also help normalise blood sugar levels, help lower cholesterol and aid in maintaining healthy blood pressure.
However it is important to know that goji berries are not suitable for everyone. If you are on blood thinners or certain medications, you may have a negative reaction so please check with your doctor if you are unsure.
Goji berries also deliver anti-aging properties in the form of lutein, this antioxidant helps prevent oxidative damage done by free radicals to your skin. Lutein can also help improve the elasticity of your skin and can help protect it from the elements of the environment.
The benefits just keep going. Goji berries stimulate the release for HGH (Human Growth Hormone). The benefits of HGH are increased libido, better sleep, increased memory and youthfulness.
Eye health and goji berries go hand in hand. Just by adding a serve to your meals or smoothies each day can help brighten and improve your eyesight.
Goji berries contain zeaxanthin, lutein and beta carotene. Did you know that Beta-carotene is converted into Vitamin A by the body? Vitamin A gets converted into retinal and helps us to be able to see light and dark. Vitamin A can also help prevent eye related conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma.
How to serve them
There are many ways that you can add goji berries into your diet. You can add them to your breakfast in the morning or your daily smoothie.
I personally like to create beauty bliss balls and add a scoop of goji berries to the mix, they make a great snack in the afternoon and a tasty alternative snack food for children instead of junk food
