Boy, is the sugar industry in trouble! If you’ve been reading or watching the news, then you’ve probably heard that members of the food (and more specifically, the sugar) industry paid off US government officials back in the 1950s to wage a war on dietary fat.
Prior to this period, fat was a key component of the American diet. So in its place we were urged to eat a high carbohydrate (and as a result, a high sugar) diet as an allegedly safe alternative.
What was the result of this industry and US government collusion?
HUGE increases in obesity, heart disease, Type-2 Diabetes and various forms of cancer throughout the public!
This misguided and profit-driven notion has cost millions of people over the past 60 years either their lives or their livelihoods. Sugar is a problem, and it’s not just because we’ve been pushed away from dietary fat…
If you’ve ever looked up the health detriments of eating sugar, you’ll probably come across brain scans comparing the effects of sugar to other more frowned upon white substances. For instance, did you know that sugar elicits practically the same response in our brains as cocaine does in a cocaine addict’s brain?
No wonder you can’t resist the urge when you pass a bakery, a café or a donut shop; you’re addicted!
And with over two-thirds of Americans either overweight or obese, you’re definitely not the only one.
I’ll be the first to tell you: I used to be a sugar addict. I loved ice cream, cookies, cupcakes, sugary cereals, etc. You name it, I ate it all, and I ate it in large quantities practically every single day. This is one of the primary reasons that I gained 70 pounds during my sophomore year of college. My complete lack of knowledge about nutrition and my severe addiction to sugar played havoc with my health and shape.
Fortunately, I’ve lost exactly 100 pounds since that time. Over the years of weight loss, I tried many different fad diets and exercise methodologies, hoping to find something that stuck long-term. In the end I did. And what was the secret key ingredient to all of it?
A detox from sugar!
When people hear the word ‘detox’ these days, they often think of some juicing or liquid cleanse without solid food for ‘x’ number of days. In this case, that’s not what I’m referring to…
In this article, I’m going to explain to you why sugar is detrimental to your health, and what you can do to substitute for it in your daily life.
We’ve already established that sugar is one of the most addictive substances on earth. It has absolutely ZERO health benefit, especially in the processed form most people consume daily.
- Did you know that sugar causes inflammation, which can explain your joint pain?
- Did you know sugar fuels cancer cells? And isn’t it a sick joke that many oncologists have lollipops and candy in their waiting rooms for cancer patients?
- Sugar also causes a process called the Insulin Resistance Cycle, which can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and eventually, Type-2 Diabetes.
- Did you know that Type-2 Diabetes is one of the costliest and most PREVENTABLE and REVERSIBLE conditions millions of people around the world suffer from?
You shouldn’t maintain the status quo by injecting yourself with insulin or by popping a pill; You get rid of it with a detox from sugar!
So is it possible to detox from sugar? And if it is, is there a way to have your cake and eat it too?
The answers to both questions: Yes and yes!
Let’s start with whether it’s possible to detox from sugar. It is, but it’s going to be tough. Like any addictive substance, you will experience some form of withdrawal. These include, but are not limited to: headaches, migraines, joint pain, low energy, irritability and even ‘the shakes.’
My advice? Wean yourself off. If you ingest copious amounts of sugar every day, cut it back to every other day. Then every two. Once you go a week without it, try to do without it entirely.
In terms of having your cake and eating it too? Welcome organic stevia leaf extract into your life!
This natural sweetener from South America has ZERO effect on your blood sugar levels, and no negative impact on your health or on your waistline. Substitute it for sugar in your coffee and in anything you bake. There are websites that show the conversions of how much stevia to substitute for sugar in different dishes and homemade desserts.
There are natural forms of sugar that are much healthier for you: Fruit!
But be wary – watch for the glycemic index of the fruit you’re eating.
For those of you who don’t know, the glycemic index is a scale from 0-100. 0 signifies that there’s absolutely no sugar in the fruit, and 100 means that’s all it is. You want to eat fruits that fall between 0-49 on the glycemic index, and really seek to minimize the ones on the opposite end of the spectrum.
While eating fruit is healthier than eating ice cream, I’ve had many weight loss clients who ate relatively healthy minus the fact that they ate way too much high glycemic fruit.
How do you determine the glycemic index of a fruit in question? Simple: Google it!
