Turkey vs. Chicken – which is healthier?

With Thanksgiving around the corner, everybody’s planning on having turkey! But it makes you wonder, is turkey actually a good idea? Maybe we should change the thanksgiving ritual and have chicken instead? After all, we usually have many days of leftover turkey at our tables. So is turkey meat really a fine addition to our diet?

Of course it’s a good idea.

Turkey is great for your health! If you have been comparing turkey vs chicken and feeling uneasy about maybe overdoing it with the bird this Thanksgiving, rest assured, turkey is just as good as chicken, if not even a little better!

If you’re looking to lose weight, your first concern might be about calories, fats and cholesterol. Well, turkey is the winner here, but actually, chicken comes pretty close after it.

However, if you’re hypertensive and have some concerns about salt intake, you might lean a little towards chicken, which has a lower sodium content. But on the other hand, maybe you just might try to skip adding any salt to your meal and go ahead and have your turkey.

So again – turkey or chicken?

That’s a tough one! Both are just so nutritious and good for your health. They’re both an excellent source of protein, much healthier than the red animal meats, which have been linked in many research studies to atherosclerosis and high blood cholesterol and lipids, as well as to many cancers.
It’s true that turkey has a slightly lower amount of protein than chicken, but it definitely has enough to satisfy your hunger and rev up your metabolism.

Turkey and chicken both supply a wide array of vitamins including, the important B vitamins-thiamine, folate, pantothenic acid, and vitamin B 12.

Also, both turkey and chicken contain all the essential minerals, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, and manganese. You name it, you’ll find it in both turkey and chicken. However, turkey is slightly higher in copper and chicken is higher in niacin.

– Breast or leg?

Another important question to ask when eating either turkey or chicken is; should you go for the breast or the leg? Unless you particularly like the leg, or the breast has been taken, go for the breast, it has fewer calories !

If you’re really concerned about providing good nutrition for your family, it is very important to consider different healthy cooking methods, as these can greatly affect the nutritious value of your meals.

Cooking methods

Avoid deep frying at all costs, except maybe two or three times a month when you really crave it. Boil, broil, bake, microwave, or barbeque, these are all acceptable methods.

The roasted turkey or baked chicken is a great option, just get rid of all the drippings and remove all the skin and fats before eating. Mix in a whole variety of healthy vegetables and you’ve got a perfect meal, for you and your loved ones on Thanksgiving and on any other day of the year.

So, the bottom line to end the turkey vs chicken debate is: both are excellent sources of nutrients and can be used interchangeably to prepare amazing dishes for you, your family and your guests.
