9 Things to Look For in a Personal Trainer

Hiring a Personal Fitness Trainer can be a rewarding opportunity.  You will not only benefit from their knowledge and guidance but will also develop a close relationship that can affect your lifestyle in a positive way.

The Fitness Industry has exploded since the 1950s when Hollywood celebrities made Muscle Beach popular, today a personal fitness trainer is accessible to virtually everyone from the schoolteacher to the executive.

While working with a cutting edge Personal Fitness Company in Dallas, Texas we created some essential guidelines for hiring a personal trainer.  We took great pride in this and as a result set the standard in the Fitness market place for the Dallas/Ft.Worth area.

Here are some suggestions on what to look for in a Personal Trainer. Get this right and the results will follow!

1.  Connection

Find someone you can connect with. Just because they are qualified does not mean they are right for you.  Find some common ground with a Trainer, such as personal values or similar fitness interests.

2. Training Philosophy

An experienced fitness trainer will have a sound training philosophy that they believe in – have them explain it to you.

3. Education

It is wise to find a PT that has a college education in the Physical Education field.  A degree in Physical Education provides a good scientific basis to provide fitness training.

4. Experience

There is no substitute for time. It is a good idea to find a Trainer with 2 or 3 years of experience.  Working with people requires time in order to develop their craft.

5. Attentiveness

During an exercise session, the trainer should always be aware of how the client is performing an exercise correctly.

6. Knowledgeable

Ask what a Trainer’s expertise is; for example, some seem to know more about strength training, while others seem to know more about aerobic fitness.

7. Nutrition

A seasoned Trainer should have a sufficient amount of knowledge to consult with you for your basic nutritional needs.

8. Physical Appearance

A Trainer should have a “Fit” body that represents good credibility as a fitness trainer and creates a source of inspiration for you.

9. Motivator

A Trainer must be able to motivate you to want to work out!  This should be his/her number one priority.

He/she must be able to ‘push your buttons’ in order to make sure you will get the most out of your work out

Finding a personal trainer can be a difficult task because an ideal Trainer will possess some unique qualities, such as a physically fit body, dynamic personality, and good knowledge base in fitness, and yet still care about your fitness needs.  If you are lucky, a close friend or co-worker will refer a qualified trainer to you, if not the suggestions given will help you find a Fitness Trainer that is suitable for you.

Once you find the right Trainer, you will know it was worth the effort!
