Put some kick in your aqua
Water is essential for us and although it’s great to drink it in its pure and natural state, there are some benefits from adding other ingredients to your water.
We all know making sure your body is well hydrated is vital – good hydration helps your kidneys function properly, aids weight loss, boosts your metabolism and helps you maintain high energy levels. But by adding fruits and herbs to your water, you also include essential vitamins and minerals. This actually increases your chances of drinking your daily recommended water intake.
Don’t be tempted to buy flavoured waters from the supermarket shelves, though – most contain preservatives, artificial sweeteners, artificial colourings, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup and refined sugar (read those labels! )
Instead, make your own infusions at home – it’s really very easy. Simply add fresh fruit, fragrant fresh herbs and spices to filtered water and put it in the fridge. Try different combinations to find the taste you like – it’s so much better for you than fizzy drinks!
Here are some classic flavoured water ideas to get you underway:
One of my favourites – add freshly squeezed lemon juice to lukewarm water (I recommend drinking this one first thing in the morning).
Benefits: Drinking lemon water helps balance ph, boosts your immune system, aids digestion and weight loss as well as stimulating your liver. It also provides you with a great dose of vitamin C.
CUCUMBER, MINT & LEMON WATER
½ a cucumber, sliced
¼ cup fresh mint leaves
½ a lemon, sliced
This flavoured water is great for managing bloating and improving digestion.
PINEAPPLE WATER WITH GINGER
½ cup cubed pineapple
1 tablespoon freshly-grated ginger
Benefits: This is another great infused water for your digestion – ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties.
STRAWBERRY, RASPBERRY AND BLUEBERRY WATER
Take a handful of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, then add the filtered water and let it sit for 30 minutes. Refrigerate and enjoy.
Benefits: This water’s full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and tastes ‘berry’ nice too.
WATERMELON, MINT & CINNAMON WATER
½ watermelon cut up in small chunks
Benefits: This type of flavoured water will help you detox. Watermelon helps the body flush out toxins. It contains citrulline, which is an amino acid that has been shown to help the liver and kidney during the detoxification process.
GREEN TEA, MINT & LIME WATER
Make a good quality green tea and cool it down.
Add ½ bunch of mint and some sliced lime.
Benefits: Great for fat burning and digestion.
Take a bunch of parsley, cut it in small pieces and put it in a pot. Pour on clean water and boil for ten minutes. Let it cool down and then filter it and pour into a clean bottle. Put it inside refrigerator to cool.
