Home-Field Advantage: Baltimore Running Festival, The Marathon Champion

Home-field Advantage is a travel series that highlights where locals love to eat, train and play. To kick off this series, we asked four people preparing for the Baltimore Running Festival to show us the city through their eyes.

Brand new to Baltimore as a full time medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine last year, Alex Wang turned to the very thing that always made her feel at home: running. Alex decided to run the 2014 Baltimore Marathon to help provide a connection to the city, the people and herself. She ended up winning, making the connection that much more meaningful.

“Running is an important part of my life. It’s therapy, it’s what I can focus on outside of school, and what connects me with people. Ultimately, running keeps me grounded in all the stress that one day can hold.”

With a new pride in her city, Alex has decided to show her gratitude by helping other Baltimore Marathon runners reach their best times by becoming an official pacer for the 3:15 group. During training, she frequented some of her favorite places:

Running in Mount Vernon, one of Baltimore’s oldest neighborhoods in the Women’s UA Charged Bandits.

Best Run Route: Mount Vernon
One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and a National Landmark Historic District, Mount Vernon features the estate of George Washington and the original Washington Monument. Alex enjoys running past the breathtaking architecture, and sharing footsteps with the founders of the U.S.

Best Post-run Snack: Watermelon
Sure, it’s got potassium, vitamin A and amino acids, but Alex really loves watermelon because nothing tastes better on a summer day after a hard run.

Best Post-run Stop: Baltimore Bazaar Farmer’s Market
On Sundays, Alex likes to end her runs at the Baltimore Bazaar and refuel from there. Besides the incredible selection of produce and coffee, the food stands are sure to satisfy your post-run hunger. Alex can be caught at the falafel and breakfast burrito stands.

The Walters Art Museum is Alex’s go-to place to relax.

Best Place to Relax on a Rest Day: Walters Art Museum
An incredible and unique collection without all the crowds of DC, the Walters Art Museum is perfect for culture and reflection. As a bonus, you can see exhibitions for free every Thursday night through December 18, 2015.

Best Refueling Spot: Baba’s Mediterranean Kitchen
If there is one thing that rivals Alex’s passion for running, it’s food. Baba’s Mediterranean Kitchen delivers with rich Mediterranean flavors that are fresh, natural and healthy. Don’t pass up on the hummus or the baklava.
