Are you a data junkie? Do you like to stay up-to-speed on the latest trends in health and fitness? Well then we’ve got good news. We’re launching a new series today called 60 Second Insights where we dive deep into our data pool and bring you fun facts about our community. In this week’s edition, we take a look at the walking community. We often see data on runners and cyclists, but what about walkers? How about this – did you know MapMyWalk is our fastest growing brand? It’s true. We took a closer look at our walking community and found some pretty interesting statistics.
True or False: The longest walk recorded through MapMyFitness was 30 miles.
FALSE: More than 60 people have logged walks 50 miles or longer* in the last year. Of these walking champions, 65% lived in the US and 17% in the UK. More than half of this group (65%) are female. Nice job, ladies!
True or False: Those who walk, only walk.
FALSE: 69% of users who logged a workout in the last year logged at least 1 walk – which means most people are logging various types of activities.
Who’s Walking?
- Of those who logged at least one walk, the most common age group was 55 and over, with 96.5% of this age group logging a walk. More than 10% of this age group log more than two walks a week
- On average, 5.5% of walkers will walk 1-2 times per week, 5.2% will walk more than twice per week.
- We have about 7% of active users who classify as “moderate” walkers (walk 1-2 times per week) or “heavy” walkers (walk 3 or more times per week).
Use your lunch break:
When’s the best time time to go for a walk ? We suggest lunch time. When looking at other types of activities (runs, rides, walks, etc.) we see similar distributions of workouts over days of the week and hours of the day – the most popular times are after work hours on weekdays (5-9 p.m) and the mornings on the weekends (8 a.m to noon).
However, among walkers we see a spike in activity between 12 p.m and 2 p.m on weekdays – lunch hours. Take a look below for pattern distribution.
*Blue = runs, Green = walks, Red = rides
Log those calories:
Based on our data, frequent walkers are more engaged with monitoring their nutrition on our platform as well. Compared against all users who log one or more workout of any type per week, those who log one or more walk per week (heavy and moderate walkers) are more likely to use our apps to log food they eat. When it comes to a healthy lifestyle, we all know being active and eating right matter. Follow these walkers and start logging food today.
That wraps up this week’s 60 Second Insights. If there are certain topics you want us to cover – leave comments below and we’ll take a look!
*Methodology: In determining the longest walks, we looked at all workouts logged with an activity type of Walk over the last year. We only used verified workouts, and we further eliminated walks where the average speed was above 5 mph from most of our analyses.
