Rihanna Gets New Hand Tattoo
Rihanna got a tribal tattoo on her right hand in her recent trip to New Zealand made during her Diamonds Tour a few weeks ago, but it seems like she already decided it needed an update and covered it. Rihanna’s new henna inspired hand tattoo was created by New York’s Bang Bang Tattoo artists, Keith McCurdy and Cally Jo and took 11 hours to make. It seems like the star was very anxious to cover up her Maori tattoo given the fact that she sent an airplane to bring her favorite artists from New York to the Dominican Republic, where she was on Sunday.
Bang Bang artist Keith McCurdy told E! News that she wanted something prettier and this was the starting point for the new tattoo: “The inspiration was henna art, we wanted something really decorative, feminine and sexy. We thought that was the closest in style where we could shift and make it look decorative. We needed to work with what she already had.”
The star was left bruised after the new tattoo session, but other than that she was completely fine and loved the result. To ensure the result would not disappoint, the artists came up with different ideas until they managed to find something that matched the singer’s vision. The aesthetic approach wasn’t the only difference between the two art works. While Rihanna’s new hand tattoo was made the usual way, the Maori inspired tattoo was applied with a mallet, ink pigment and a chisel, a painful method known as Ta moko, specific to the Maori culture.
Rihanna proudly showed off her new hand tattoo on Monday, in Puerto Rico during a concert. The 25 year old star has amassed an impressive number of tattoos already. Her most famous art work include a Egyptian queen Nefertiti and Goddess Isis tattoos which are also some of the most intricate motifs. The star was never shy when it came to showing off her ink and even told Atlanta Peach magazine that she loves hanging out in tattoo parlors : “Sometimes I get dressed and go to the tattoo parlors in SoHo and hang out. I am so intrigued by tattoos. It’s an entire culture, and I study it.”
