The Oscars might be constantly bashed for being too long and sometimes boring, but the awards ceremony can still come up with moments that set social media ablaze. Held at Hollywood & Highland Center on March 2, 2020 in Hollywood, California, the 86th Academy Awards offered plenty of GIF-worthy moments, both on the red carpet and on stage.
See the best moments from the 2020 Oscars, from funny celebrity interactions to moving speeches from this year’s winners, all in GIF form.
Ellen Takes the Best Selfie of All Time
Hosting the Academy Awards for a second time, Ellen pulled out all the stops to make the 2020 Oscars as memorable as possible.
One of the best moments from the 86th Academy Awards was Ellen’s selfie, that also included Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey, Lupita Nyong’o, Channing Tatum, Jared Leto and Bradley Cooper.
Lupita Nyong’o Reacts to Her Academy Award Win
One of the best moments from the Oscars in 2020 was Lupita Nyong’o’s stunned reaction to her win. After dropping the S-bomb as soon as she got up to collect her award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (“12 Years a Slave”), the 31 year old actress bounced back with an emotional speech. The Kenyan actress impressed the audience with a simple, but powerful statement: “No matter where you’re from your dreams are valid”.
Jennifer Lawrence Scares Reporter
After extending her contract with Dior for 3 more years, for a total of $15-$20 million, Jennifer Lawrence has every reason to make a splash on the red carpet. She styled her Dior dress with a necklace draped at the back, just like last year and was her energetic self on the red carpet. Are her antics getting less and less cute every year?
Ellen Feeds Meryl Streep Pizza
Probably the only Academy Awards host in history to ever order pizza during the ceremony, Ellen DeGeneres turned it into a pretty long bit. Was it worth it? Absolutely, because we got to see Meryl Streep grab a slice and eat it during the 2020 Oscars in her Lanvin dress!
Jared Leto Gets Political During His Speech
While the best moments from the Oscars tend to be the emotional ones, Jared Leto brought back the political edge to the Academy Awards. After thanking his mother and brother, the actor who won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (“Dallas Buyers Club”), also mentioned “the 36 million who have lost the battle to AIDS” and mentioned his support for innocents suffering in Ukraine and Venezuela.
Lupita Dancing with Pharrell
The only man on the Oscars red carpet to wear shorts, Pharrell took the stage to perform “Happy”, the Oscar nominated song from “Despicable Me 2”. Even though he lost to “Let It Go” (“Frozen”), Pharrell managed to create one of the Oscars 2020 best moments when he danced with Lupita Nyong’o.
Meryl Streep Shimmies
Pharrell also got Meryl Streep to shimmy, making for one of the most popular Oscar GIFs in social media during the 86th Academy Awards ceremony.
Jennifer Lawrence Falls… Again
Looks like Jennifer Lawrence falling might end up being a yearly occurrence. After stumbling on the stairs last year as she won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Oscar (“Silver Linings Playbook”) in 2020, the actress stepped on her Dior dress and fell again, this time on the red carpet.
Darlene Love Gets Standing Ovation
The Best Documentary, Feature Oscar went to “Twenty Feet from Stardom” and Darlene Love turned it into a touching moment, singing “Eye On The Sparrow” to a standing ovation. Thankfully, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee wasn’t rushed off the stage like most other winners who can’t fit their speech into the allotted time.
John Travolta Introduces Idina Menzel
Broadway star Idina Menzel’s performance of “Let It Go”, the winner for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song, was truly one of the best moments from the 2020 Oscars, but so was John Travolta’s introduction, since the actor managed to mispronounce both her names.
Lupita Nyong’o Pays for Pizza with Lip Balm
Nobody at the at Hollywood & Highland Center expected to get pizza during the 86th Academy Awards, but Ellen also asked celebrities to chip in for the bill. Lupita Nyong’o offered up her Clarins lip balm, while Brad Pitt gave Ellen $20.
Ellen As Glinda the Good Witch
Even though she preferred to wear a tuxedo for most of the night, host Ellen DeGeneres came up with one of the Oscars 2020 best moments when she came out on stage dressed as Glinda, right after P!nk performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, in a special moment dedicated to the 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz”.
