Best and Worst Met Gala 2020 Outfits
“China: Through the Looking Glass” was the theme of the annual Met Gala, hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. Plenty of celebrities tried to channel Chinese influences into their looks, but there were as many duds as winners.
Check out the Met Gala 2020 best and worst dressed, and see which celebrities brought their A game to the New York City event, that usually showcases some of the most daring haute couture looks. From Rihanna to Solange, here are the most memorable looks this year.
Opting for Chinese designer Guo Pei, Rihanna didn’t hold back this year, and her yellow cape was one of the best looks on the Met Gala red carpet.
With intricate embroidery and fur, the coat and cape were matched by her headpiece and gold necklace, creating a truly unique look, worthy of the best dressed list at the Met Ball.
Queen Bey had some serious competition on the red carpet from Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez who also wore transparent gowns, but the singer was more suited for the Met Gala 2020 worst dressed list. Beyoncé’s Givenchy Couture gown sparkled and fit the theme, but overall it ended up as too much even for this extravagant event.
As the co-host of the event, Jennifer Lawrence was expected to dominate the red carpet. However, the actress went for more subtle Christian Dior look. She still managed to be one of the best dressed celebrities at the Met Gala 2020, because plenty of the more daring choices stood out for the wrong reasons.
The singer’s look was to extravagant that it’s hard to tell if she belongs on the Met Gala 2020 best or worst dressed list. Perry’s interpretation of the “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme was loose at best, and her look ended up as more of a mess. While the Moschino gown was a disappointment, and the gloves were just bizarre, her pixie cut was on point.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Leave it to Sarah Jessica Parker to wear H&M on the red carpet and make it work. The actress made the Met Gala 2020 best dressed list thanks to her gorgeous headpiece. The addition of Jennifer Fisher and Cindy Chao jewelry took this one-shoulder gown to the next level, but her Philip Treacy headpiece took her look to the next level.
If Miley had shown up in this look at the 2020 “Punk: Chaos to Couture” themed ball, she would have easily made the best dressed list. Her Alexander Wang Fall 2020 gown with cutouts and all-over silver studs was a bold choice, but it just didn’t work here, and the singer ended up as one of the Met Gala 2020 worst dressed celebrities.
Even if we can’t forget Kim’s 2020 meme-starting “couch” dress from the Met Ball, the reality TV star has made amends with a simpler look last year, before returning to a more dramatic vibe. Showing off her body in a nude illusion dress designed by Peter Dundas after his return to Cavalli, Kim perfectly channeled the theme of the evening and the intricate beading on her dress was a highlight.
Wearing Custom Balenciaga, Lady Gaga had all the ingredients for a stunning look: a dramatic coatdress, makeup that channeled her inner geisha and even a crown. Unfortunately, the whole look fell apart when Gaga’s platform shoes were visible. They definitely pulled the look in the wrong direction, helping it make the Met Gala 2020 worst dressed list.
While she’s usually upstaged by her older sister, Solange managed to stick to the “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme better than Beyoncé. Wearing a Giles Fall 2020 look that has little to do with traditional Chinese design, the modern look stood out thanks to the gorgeous print and the fan-shaped front of the dress, offering a fresh take on the theme.
The singer made the worst Met Gala looks of all time list thanks to her off-theme 2020 look, and this year Alicia Keys made the same mistake. Her Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2020 Couture look featured a tulle skirt and a cropped top under a blazer, easily landing her on the Met Gala 2020 worst dressed list.
